My Dear Brother  / Margie Branchaud (Sister)

My dear brother George, your younger sister Margie, is remembering some of our lifetime years together.
Because you were born 9 years before me, I don't recall much, if any, events of you as a youth.
You rode horse back and helped do chores at home. You also helped our Grandpa Gladue haul hay and cut and haul ice from the lakes. You were not too keen on school.  I guess it was because our mom kept you from going to school until you were 9 years old. She loved to have you with her and then I came along. It was told that her family and friends talked her into letting you go to school.
When I was in the upper grades and high school you were always my protector from anyone or anything that might hurt or harm me. You called me "Mugs" or "Muggsy" in those days. We even looked alot alike. My girlfriends liked to hang around me so they had a chance to be near you. They all had crushes on you because you were so good looking.
You married Marie and Delore was born. You lived in a little log house by grandma and grandpa's house. Mama and Daddy and I lived with grandma and grandpa too. When I started to go out with Ralph you made sure I would be O.K. with him.
Ralph liked you so much and you and Ralph and daddy would go hunting. Ralph bought me a 20 gauge shotgun and I went hunting with you guys. I remember how proud you and Ralph were when I shot a duck on the fly. At first I would only shoot mud hens on the lake. We had so much fun! After then you were busy working hard to keep food on the table and had a large family.
I got married to Ralph in Wisconsin and we lived there for three years. When we came back to Rolla and St. John, Florene and Herbie were very young children-only babies. You were left to take care of your whole family alone. You gave them the best care you could by yourself. One day I went to see you at your place and you were cleaning and washing windows even. You were so afraid the County might come and take your children away. You were so afraid and sad. Ralph, Rochell and I were living in St. Thomas, N.D. and when we went to see you we all agreed that we take Florene and Herbie home with us. It was a very sad day for them and you. It broke our hearts and the children didn't want to leave their daddy. That didn't last for too many weeks. We brought them to visit and agreed that they stay with their daddy. You could not part with them again and they would not leave you again.
We left St. Thomas and moved to the western part of the state. I didn't see you much after that.
Ralph died in Rolla while we were there on a weekend. I visited you after I moved to W. Fargo with Rochell & Kenny and children. By that time your family had married and gone on their own.
On my last visit to see you I stayed at Jean Stewarts and had lunch and then went to see you. You were about to eat your meal so you asked me to eat. It was beef and potatoes and it smelled so good. You could cook good!  I was too full to eat again. Many times I have thought how nice it would have been to remember our last meal together.
It was in Mandan where I was living that I got word that you had left us. What a sad day! My only consolation was that you died where you loved to be- in the woods among the lakes and trees where you spent most of your enjoyment walking and fishing and hunting.
You left a family you could be proud of.
I miss you, my brother and I will see you again when God decides the time. My love for you lives on until then.
Margie

I REMEMBER ALL THE GOOD TIMES THAT WE HAD WITH YOU WHEN WE WERE YOUNG.  YOU ALWAYS TOOK GOOD CARE OF US, AND FED US WELL  WHEN MOM AND DAD WERE GONE, EXCEPT, THE TIME YOU GAVE US CORN ON BREAD.  I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT.  I LEARNED A LESSON FROM IT THOUGH.  NOT EVERYONE IS SO LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE ENOUGH FOOD ON THEIR TABLE.

I REMEBER THE TIME YOU AND DAD SHOT A SWAN BY ACCIDENT.  I WAS SO SCARED.  I WAS AFRAID THEY WOULD PUT YOU BOTH IN JAIL.  I LOVE YOU AND HAVE MISSED YOU, BUT I KNOW THAT YOU ARE IN THE BEST PLACE AND WITH ALOT OF THE PEOPLE WE LOVE.  I'M SURE YOU SEE DAD AND AUNTIE MYRTLE, CORBETT AND MANY UTHERS EACH DAY AND PLAY CARDS.  NO CHEATNG, NOW!

LOVE YOU, ROCHELL
